Synopsis for Kelly’s Eye
A dark comedy for everyone in the 00’s
To be staged at Arlington Arts
12-14th February 2009
Ultimately, bullying affects everyone, whether you’re at home, work or school, and Kelly a teenager who’s seen it all before at home has locked herself in her room and spends her days trawling through cyberspace for comfort. She is however able to see further than just what the internet can bring and through her eyes we are able to see what goes on when our backs are turned.
Jesse and Martina, her mother and father are of mixed race and Kelly has been having a bad time of it much to Jesse’s annoyance. So as usual Martina takes the brunt and force of Jesse’s anger. Things however are about to take a sudden change of course in Jesse’s life.
The Henshaw family, William and Jennifer (Mum and Dad) and children Gavin and Victoria are from a posh family. William has a responsible job at the factory where Jesse works and today he has got to make a number of people redundant, one of whom is Jesse. Gavin Henshaw is being physically beaten by Jesse’s boy Thom and his two mates Jed and Jules, they are also stealing all his hard earned money but Gavin decides to keep it to himself but when challenged blames his physical injuries on another family member so as not to drop the real assailant in it and thus save him from further problems. However Thom decides to take it further when he hears that Gavin’s dad has made his dad redundant. This is witnessed by Sarah (Thom’s sister) and Kylie and Tina. Kylie and Tina decide that Thom should get a cold revengeful dish and between Victoria, Kylie, Tina and Gavin a plan is hatched to make Thom eat some humble pie and get his just desserts.
Jesse however is made to see the error of his ways due to his redundancy as he goes for an interview at the local packing factory which is run by Monty and Gordon who once, for a short period of time in the 1970’s, ran a pawn shop in the East End of London. Monty is the archetypal bullying boss who wants to make a show of his ways when he employs Jesse but Heather, Jesse’s sister in law comes to his rescue and this makes him see that perhaps he must change his own bullying ways.
Thom decides that he never needs to change his ways and so when his mates Jed and Jules get jobs at the local multiplex he is left to mull over his life. Kylie and Tina however convince him it could all change if he turns up at the multiplex that evening. Thom goes and so does everyone else but what is it that makes him change? Kelly Knows!
